In 1926, Richard Field abandons his disgraced English family and flees to Shanghai where he joins the international police hoping to forge a new future. As the story unfolds, Field and Caprisi, his American partner and only friend, investigate the gruesome murder of a beautiful expatriate Russian woman. They discover that it is the latest in a string of murdered Russian women. The investigation becomes more puzzling as they penetrate the international world of Shanghais corrupt colonial factions, who compete for power and influence. In the process, Field falls in love with the murdered womans neighbor and companion Natasha Medvedev. This further complicates the investigation as they are drawn into the dangerous and lurid world of the Chinese drug lord, Lu Huang, who, it appears, controls everything, including Natasha.
For a mystery, Brady keeps the action moving with twists and turns that never disappoint. The love affair between Field and Natasha works because of Fields naïve yet believable character. From a historical perspective, there is certainly enough of Shanghai to give a sense of time and place, but it misses a good deal of local flavor. Still, this is an enjoyable read.
